چکیده

We introduce a smooth approximation of the min / max operations, called SARDF (Signed Approximate Real Distance Function), for maintaining an approximate signed distance function in constructive shape modeling. We apply constructive distance-based shape modeling to design objects with heterogeneous material distribution in the constructive hypervolume model framework. The introduced distance approximation helps intuitively model material distributions parameterized by distances to so-called material features. The smoothness of the material functions, provided here by the smoothness of the defining function for the shape, helps to avoid undesirable singularities in the material distribution, like stress or concentrations. We illustrate application of the SARDF operations by twoand three-dimensional heterogeneous object modeling case studies.

SARDF: Signed Approximate Real Distance Functions in Heterogeneous Objects Modeling

Distribution of material density and other properties of heterogeneous objects can be parametrized by the Euclidean distance function from the object boundary or from special material features. For objects constructed using geometric primitives and set-theoretic operations, an approximation of the distance function can be obtained in a constructive manner by applying special compositing operati...

Technical Report HCIS-2003-06

This paper deals with modeling heterogeneous volumetric objects as point sets with attributes using trivariate B-splines. In contrast to homogeneous volumes with uniform distribution of material and other properties, a heterogeneous volumetric object has a number of variable attributes assigned at each point. An attribute is a mathematical model of an object property of arbitrary nature (materi...

Using Anti-Aliased Signed Distance Fields for Generating Surgical Guides and Plates from CT Images

We present a method for generating shell-like objects such as surgical guides and plates from segmented computed tomography (CT) images, using signed distance fields and constructive solid geometry (CSG). We develop a userfriendly modeling tool which allows a user to quickly design such models with the help of stereo graphics, six degrees-of-freedom input, and haptic feedback, in our existing s...

Constructive Hypervolume Modeling Using Extended Space Mappings

In this paper, we propose a framework for modeling and deforming heterogeneous volumetric objects defined as point sets with attributes. We propose to use constructive hypervolume objects, where the function representation (FRep) is used as the basic model for both object geometry and attributes represented independently using realvalued scalar functions of point coordinates. While FRep directl...

Distance to objects built with set operations in constructive solid modeling

We present in this paper methods to compute the signed Euclidean distance to surfaces obtained by the intersection (respectively union or difference) of two solids (in two or three dimensions). These implementations can replace min/max or R-functions traditionally used to model set operations used with implicit surfaces.
